The Australian Parliament has now passed the Water Amendment (Restoring Our Rivers) Bill 2023.
The Bill offers more time, more options, more accountability, and more transparency to deliver the Murray-Darling Basin Plan. It also guarantees the 450GL of water for the environment.
In August 2023, an agreement was made between the Federal, New South Wales, South Australia, Queensland and Australian Capital Territory governments to deliver the Murray–Darling Basin Plan in full.
The changes to the Bill sets out a pathway to implement this agreement, ensuring a healthy and sustainable future for Australia’s largest river system.
The Bill will also improve transparency and integrity of water markets in the Basin.
